meet the founder

Carolyn McCarthy has taught and choreographed for students of diverse ages, abilities, and experiences for 20 years. Through Emergence, she supports the diversification of community-driven storytelling through high quality dance education and facilitated dialogue.

Trained classically, her love for choreography blossomed during her time in the University of Vermont (UVM) Dance Department, which gave her the platform to present original work at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) New England Conference and Vermont College Dance Festival, receiving the Senior Outstanding Performance and Choreography Award upon graduation in 2015.

Carolyn earned a Master of System Dynamics at the University of Bergen, Norway in 2018, and spent years consulting for systems-based initiatives dedicated towards shifting systems of inequity in New England’s education and energy sectors. While working for UMass Lowell, she developed curriculum for national and international institutions, and co-authored papers with leaders in her field which were published in peer-reviewed journals on climate change science, education, and communication.

Ultimately, working with computer simulation models formalized her intuition around the role of art education in systems change. She believes that each person has a unique story and perspective to contribute towards community narrative and decision-making. she seeks to create Safe and inviting spaces to express, explore, and present ideas that lead to collective learning, visioning, and liberation.
